If your space is feeling a little too traditional try to bring in a few clear elements, either in modern materials or in chunky shapes. Technology items are often tricky due to it changing so much. For a modern approach, turn your media wall into a display area, tucking away tech boxes in cabinets or on open shelves among artwork, candles and heirlooms. Try to use a wireless TV transmitter for your TV to avoid a mess of cables. A throw blanket gives your room a sense of life, casual elegance and a dash of color or texture. They're a great way to experiment with wall paper or carpet as they are small, contained spaces devoid of furniture and other elements that compete with an unexpected floor or wall treatment. Take a step back and make sure that what you're seeing is what you really want to stand out.
